The Constitution Square, also called the “Old Square”, is the oldest square in the city. In the Muslim era it was an irregular square and constituted the main souk. It gained its final appearance in the mid-19th century, with colonnades on the ground floor and two-storey houses.
The square is overooked by the Town Hall building, which is of eclectic style, built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This square has represented, for some years, the social, political and administrative centre of Almeria, with the monument dedicated to the Martyrs of Freedom being at the centre of it.
