Cathedral of Almeria

Cathedral of Almeria

Building of the cathedral began in 1524, after the earthquake that destroyed the first cathedral in 1522, which was located at the Old Main Mosque in Medina.

Its main characteristic is that of being a cathedral-fortress, because it was built both for religious worship and as a refuge for the population against the attacks of Berber pirates.

This cathedral is called the Incarnation and went from Gothic to Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. At present, it is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest, decreed in 1931.

For some years, bishops such as Juan de Portocarrero, Villalán and Fray Manuel de Santos Tomás, among others, carried out different renovations to this cathedral, as well as the construction of the Sagrario chapel and its bell tower.
