This characteristic rock symbol of Almeria has its origin in the caves found in the Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park, and these ancestral artistic creations in turn have been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1998.
This Natural Park includes the famous “Cueva de los Letreros” and the “Abrigo de las Colmenas”, where the origin of the Indalo figure is thought to be, which shows a man holding a kind of bow over his head, representing a kind of divinity.
The indalo reached its current popularity as a regional symbol driven by an intellectual movement called “indaliano”, led by Jesus de Perceval (1915-1985) from the 1940s.
Today this figure can be seen in different logos, crafts and souvenirs from Almeria, becoming the authentic symbol of Almeria.
