The Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Reserve and Nature Reserve is located between the towns of El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar. It is a coastal wetland reclaimed from the sea with more than 2,740 hectares that has an ecosystem formed by dunes and salt flats, with unique fauna and flora.
Among the rich vegetation that makes up the dunes, you can find native species adapted to the environment that is subject to water scarcity, high temperatures and salt concentration. Some of the species you can see are Phoenician juniper and lentisk.
This fossil dune ecosystem, together with the ponds, salt marshes and saltworks of Cerrillos, harbors a large number of species, some of which are in danger of extinction. It is an ideal place for the practice of ornithology and the sighting of birds like Audouin's gulls, herons, avocets, flamingos, waders and ducks.
In this natural area is the Tower of Cerrillos: a coastal fortification dating from 1575. It will soon be restored and preserved thanks to an agreement between the municipalities of El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar.
