In the Sierra de los Filabres is Velefique. It is a municipality of 66.35 km² that is characterized by being at the foot of important mountain formations, and for protecting a medieval town inside the fortress. In the 8th century, the first inhabitants settled in this region and were of Arab origin. They gave it the name Balafiq, which means “Valley of the Figs”.
Its white and whitewashed stone houses are one of the most noted characteristics of its urbanism. It is a typical rural town, peaceful and with a small population, due to the constant migrations of its inhabitants. Ruins of the medieval fortress that dominated this town for centuries, with an ancient and rich history, are still preserved.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, its main economic activities were silk looms and small-scale agriculture. At present, olive and almond trees are its main crops.
From the town, you can follow the route that goes up to the peak called La Tetica de Bacares. It is a demanding route frequented by mountain bikers.
