Jesus Nazarene Castle (Garrucha - Almeria)

Jesus Nazarene Castle (Garrucha)

This fortress, with a semicircular battery of artillery and two circular towers, defended the coast from attacks by pirates. It was built in 1769 and currently houses the “Nautarum” fishing interpretation center. It is also used as an exhibition hall and for the organization of different activities in the town.

The entrance of the land front is composed of a parade ground determined to defend the access. Then, the patio, or central nucleus, reaches the interior spaces, as well as the defence cover, by means of ramps and stairs. Finally, the battery is accessed through a ramp, which was the artillery platform.

Regarding the construction of the Jesus Nazarene Castle, the main walls were created with masonry, which explains their thickness. On the other hand, the corners and angles are reinforced with considerably large stone ashlars.
