Virgin of Carmel Hermitage (Garrucha)

This small hermitage is dedicated to the Virgin of Carmel, patroness saint of the fishermen and the town. It was blessed in 1951 and on its altar is the Virgin of Carmel, in addition to other images.

The Hermitage's interior is decorated with frescoes by the artist Manuel Muñoz Barberan, depicting a scene with fishermen and women on each side of an altar. There are also different paintings depicting the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, as well as a painting of the Virgin of Rocio. Masses are celebrated there daily.

The most significant aspect of its interior is the Our Lady of Mount Carmel that is on its altar and that gives its name to this church. This image was donated by Don Ambrosio Lopez, born in Garrucha, who was a magistrate of the Supreme Court. It was obtained in one of the Santa Rufina workshops in Madrid.

The image of the Virgin of Carmel arrived in Garrucha in 1955 and since then the hermitage has housed it. The Virgin of Carmel Hermitage has a simple white and gray facade that combines perfectly, but is still striking. It especially stands out thanks to its large wooden main door, its colonial details and the small but beautiful stairs that make up the entrance to the enclosure.
