Within the most impressive mountain ranges in Spain, we have Sierra Nevada, located on a large scale in the province of Granada, which extends in its eastern part to the province of Almeria.
It is a natural spectacle where the diversity of its flora and fauna stand out throughout the area. It has definitely attracted the attention of millions of people who visit it as the perfect place to rest, enjoy the environment and spend pleasant moments with friends or family.
Sierra Nevada was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986 and later in 1999, as a National Park for its great landscapes and botanical value.
In this mountain range, we can find the sources of rivers that are of vital importance such as the Genil, the Nacimiento and the Fardes, to name a few.
Although most of this mountain range is in Granada, the mountain ranges that cross the province of Almeria stand out for their majestic peaks, in particular, "El Chullo", which, at 2,611 metres is the highest peak in Almeria.
Right at the foot of this range we can find the Puerto de la Ragua recreational station, which was installed on the border between the provinces of Almeria and Granada. There you can enjoy numerous attractions and find information about the winter and summer activities that are available.
During the winter season, you can try cross-country skiing, for which special tracks have been constructed. In addition, you can carry out an ascent of the nearest peaks.
Another activity at that time of the year is ski touring, which can be done depending on the amount of snow present.
Not only can you climb the most impressive peaks, but you can also reach very beautiful areas such as the Nacimiento river, the “Marquesado de Zenete” or the Alpujarra, either from Almeria or Granada.
Meanwhile, summer also allows participation in various recreational activities within Sierra Nevada.
Trekking in Sierra Nevada
It is worth mentioning the trekking routes and well signposted paths, which enable you to reach the Ferreira Viewpoint, where you will enjoy an impressive view.
You will not be able to resist the temptation to explore for a day or more, where you can stop off at the various refuge points, while crossing the most impressive peaks in the area.
