Numerous ruins can be seen in the municipality, which are testimony to its rich prehistoric past, particularly from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Other ancient civilizations later settled in the place, such as the Romans, the Celts, and the Argarians, who also left traces of their culture.
The origin of the population dates back to the 13th century, when a tower was erected to watch for the presence of Christian troops that constantly besieged the Nasrid kingdom.

Monuments and buildings of a military and religious type from different periods can be seen in the town.
