The municipality of Chirivel is included in the Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park and has a landscape very different to the rest of the province. It is characterized by its Mediterranean climate, limestone mountains and pine forests.

Here there are human settlements dating back to prehistory. The archaeological sites indicate that the Iberian and Arab cultures developed here, but the culture with the greatest influence was the Roman. In El Villar, a nearby village, luxurious pieces of Roman origin have been found, such as capitals and marble columns. This has led historians to speculate that here was the mansion of the Roman official Ad-Morum. The statue of Dionysus, discovered in the place, dates from the 2nd century BC and became the symbol of the place, being known as the “Chirivelo".

Many ancient buildings and monuments are part of its cultural heritage and are examples of the civil and religious architecture of the time. The population also has a good number of parks and natural walks in which you can enjoy a pleasant mountain environment. The main economic activity of its inhabitants is the cultivation of cereals, potatoes and vegetables.
