Due to its strategic location, on the border between the Region of Murcia and Andalusia, Cantoria was, through history, the ideal place for the settlement of many peoples and civilizations, which left behind the legacy of their ancestral cultures.

Its origin dates back to prehistory, and already in the 12th century it was an Arab town of some importance. It passed to Christian rule with the conquest of Granada in 1488. The current settlement of the town took place between 1570 and 1573, although it was not until November 30, 1833 that Cantoria was established as a municipality in the province of Almeria.

Its current structure was configured in the Modern Era, with all its urban elements. The economic activity of Cantoria is based on agriculture, together with one of the most important marble companies in the world.
