The red cross on a white background present on the shield and the flag of Almeria, both in the province and in the city, has a fascinating history that dates back to 1147, when the Republic of Genoa army landed on which today is the Los Genoveses Beach in Cabo de Gata.
The army arrived to participate in the conquest of king Alfonso VII of Leon, then to the Christian cause of the Iberian territories, to liberate the area from the hands of the Muslim Almoravides empire.
As it is known, red and white are the characteristic colours of the Republic of Genoa that controlled trade throughout the Mediterranean, which was then adopted by the British with permission of the Genoese. Today it is the base for the flag of England, and is present in many shields and flags such as Aragon, Barcelona and Zaragoza.
The flag was officially adopted by the city of Almeria in 1469 after the reconquest of the Catholic Monarchs.
