Tijola is a municipality with open, happy people who quickly establish relationships with all visitors. Its territory, according to historical references, has had a human presence since prehistory, and much of its charm stems from its religious value.

Church of Saint Mary

The intensity and religious devotion of the inhabitants of Tijola are patented in the various spaces dedicated to religious fervour and their buildings.

The church began construction as a small temple with a single nave in the 17th century and constitutes the main religious centre of the town, around which, throughout history, a network of streets has developed that converge towards it.

The Three Hermitages

A short distance from one another are the Hermitage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (17th century), the Hermitage of Saint Sebastian (16th century), and the Hermitage of Saint Cajetan (16th century), where the image of the Virgin of Fatima is found, whose procession takes place on May 13 through the decorated and colourful streets.

Festivals

These are held in honour of the Patroness Saint of Tijola, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. They begin every year in September with numerous activities and events. On September 15, the great event of the procession is held through the decorated streets of Tijola de la virgen and her courtship. The civil and military authorities, representatives of all sectors, the bridesmaids, and the majestic band of the municipality meet this day.
 
On the first Sunday in May, the Day of the Cross is celebrated. This is a way to celebrate the beginning of the month of flowers and good weather. Associations of different types, brotherhoods, and neighbours in general in the different neighbourhoods of Tijola decorate their houses with innumerable pots of colourful flowers.

Another event that involves all of Tijola is the procession of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the town, which is celebrated every January 20.

Balsa de Cela

This is a natural wonder located just over 3 km from Tijola. It consists of hot springs that emerge constantly with temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees and that have been confined to this large square pool of 50 meters on each side, with a depth of 50 cm to 2 meters. The medicinal properties for the treatment of various diseases attract frequent visits.

Place of the “Cerrada de Valentín”

Located on the mountains that dominate the views of the Almanzora Valley, this is a true natural treasure. Due to the abundance of water and mineral deposits, and to the strategic location, it must have been highly coveted over time and there are vestiges of ancient populations that settled there.
