In the heart of Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, 50 kilometres from the city of Almeria, this beautiful village with white houses and a contagious tranquillity attracts everyone who visits it.
A place with flavours and colours
The variety of the gastronomic offering in Las Negras offers is based on the traditional flavours of the Almeria coast, with products from the Mediterranean Sea fused with vegetables grown in the area.
Sticky rice with seafood and octopus next to the beach is a must in Las Negras, as all its ingredients are guaranteed fresh.
It is said that the best beaches and coves on the entire Almeria coast, and even in all of Andalusia, are here, in this natural park with which everyone who visits falls in love.
The months of June, July and August see the largest number of visitors to the town and are when the most outstanding festivals are celebrated. Specifically, on June 23 there is a verbena in the street, followed by a ritual on the beach that includes dinner, bonfires and a bath in the presence of the moon, all in honour of Saint John. Meanwhile, on August 15, the Virgin of the Assumption, patroness saint of the village, is worshiped.
Historically, Las Negras was inhabited only by its fishermen, but today, at least half of its inhabitants are foreigners, especially Germans, who came as tourists and transformed the place into their new home.
Despite this, in the town, it is still possible to see a herd of goats and sheep guided by a shepherd to the pastures or, on the shore of the beaches, fishermen who prepare their boats to start work. This means the town continues to maintain its essence.
Along with the white houses characteristic of Cabo de Gata, you can see in perfect harmony the new accommodation for tourists, which, although modern, maintains in its essence the architecture, height and colour of traditional homes.
As a curious fact, on the shore of the beach, you can find dark-coloured stones originating from “El Cerro Negro”, which is composed mainly of volcanic material. The erosion of this hill has painted the bottom of the sea and the sand on the beach black, giving rise to the name of the town: Las Negras.
