On the coast of Almeria, specifically in the municipality of Carboneras, the small Saint Andrew island is visible. It is a territory made up of two islands known as “Big Island” and “Small Island”, both of which were created by volcanic activity in the area.

Although it lacks permanent inhabitants, Saint Andrew island attracts thousands of people every year, mainly due to the spectacular beauty of its surroundings and its magnificent conditions for diving.

The Council of Andalusia declared the Saint Andrew island as a Natural Monument on October 1, 2003.

Saint Andrew island covers 35.43 hectares and has a maximum height of 13 metres above sea level, and its depth is about 10 metres below sea level.

The seabed represents a great wealth of natural features. It is a wild background and from the surface you can see volcanic craters.

In addition, you can see the Posidonea Oceanica meadows, which make these crystalline waters a bit dark in places.

The rocky walls of this unique island have caves and crevices that allow the coexistence of a great diversity of marine species that give life to this wonderful natural scenery.

Among the fish typical of the Mediterranean and bordering the island are the Mediterranean barracuda, the grouper, the damselfish, the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse, the East Atlantic peacock wrasse and the Diplodus sargus sargus, among many others.

Seabirds also abound, taking advantage of the fish that are their food; we can find terns, Phalacrocorax, egrets and shearwaters, among many other birds that can be seen in the province of Almeria.

Underwater reserve

The underwater reserve off the coast of Saint Andrew island is exquisite. Especially remarkable are the volcanic craters of exceptional beauty and unique formations, which makes this area a wonderful setting for diving activites.

Although it is a relatively small island, it has many unique features that make it a really interesting place to visit. It is a protected place and therefore any preservation controls that are necessary to maintain it must be taken into account.

Most importantly, tourists are strongly encouraged to do their part to preserve its great charm.
