Located within the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, in Almeria (Spain), Los Escullos is a beautiful beach with particular and striking attractions. Saint Philip Castle presides over the beach from one end, and on the other side is an amazing fossil dune of a capricious shape with a long projection that gives the impression of being in the air.
The beach is of fine sand. The gentle breeze and the pleasant rhythm of the waves make the beach an attractive and relaxing place to rest. The variety of fish in these waters invites you to snorkel and admire the diversity of sizes and colours of the marine flora and fauna.
Castle of Saint Philip
Construction of the Castle of Saint Philip began in 1764, during the reign of Charles III of Spain, with the aim of defending the coast and fighting the frequent acts of piracy in the Mediterranean Sea.
It is a clear example of the conception that existed in that time of coastal defences. This castle is a mass built with stone that housed batteries of cannons pointing towards the sea and covering the 180 degrees of coastline that surrounded it.
It had interior buildings to house soldiers, common areas and a chapel, among other rooms. After many vicissitudes, misuse and abandonment, this building was rescued and restored at the beginning of the last century.
Fossilized dune
The dune, fossilized and eroded by the action of the wind, is of oolitic origin (petrified sand), with a curious shape due to erosion. It is estimated to be more than 100,000 years old. For many years, it was submerged when the waters of the Mediterranean Sea covered the area now occupied by the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park.
Specialists point out that at some point, the sea withdrew due to a severe climate change that brought the water level to the current limit, revealing this amazing formation that, over time, the wind and the waves of the sea have produced. The pronounced projection of this dune, a well-known image, has allowed visitors to climb it and take millions of photos over time.
Adjacent to Los Escullos are interesting places such as El Embarcadero Beach, thus integrating themselves into an environment of great environmental beauty. The attractiveness of these places has motivated their use as locations for the filming of movies such as
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,
007: Never Say Never Again and
Les Dalton.
