Many people in the world have seen running as an ideal sport to keep fit and improve their lifestyle.
In addition, the activity can be practised outdoors, so that contact with nature is an additional benefit, and it does not involve a large investment in money, which represents an excellent opportunity.
Running has become a popular activity all around the world. Almeria in particular receives runners from many countries who visit to train or compete on different routes.
What makes this province an ideal area to practise running is, without a doubt, its magnificent landscape. Whether by mountains or along the coast, running in Almeria is ideal for renewing your energy.
It does not matter if you go alone or in a group, however, we will present a series of routes on which you can meet new challenges, as you get to know areas of this beautiful province full of magic and beauty.
Cortijo del Fraile
It covers a circular route of at least 77 kilometres and those who have experienced it say that it has an average difficulty.
It is ideal for runners who will enjoy the clean and pure air provided by the local vegetation, mostly prickly pears, pitas, palmitos and espartos.
It is very seldom visited, especially at certain times of the year, which makes it an ideal setting for sports practice.
A tourist trail can be taken from the Cabo Gata Natural Park, which is halfway along the path between Rodalquilar and Los Albaricoques, both of which belong to the Nijar region.
The Cortijo de Fraile is one of the best known places in the Natural Park, famous for an unfortunate event known as “El Crimen de Nijar”. This has inspired great literary works such as “Bodas de Sangre”, by Federico Garcia Lorca.
Saint Anne Castle - Punta Estinas-Sabinar
Punta Estinas-Sabinar has been considered by the European Union as a Special Protection Area for Birds and is, without a doubt, one of the most delightful places to practise running.
It is 14 kilometres long and its route is linear. It is said that it is very simple for those who want to start in this sport, while also allowing a rather pleasing route along the seafront of Roquetas de Mar.
It starts right at Saint Anne Castle and is an ideal route to practise your speed, since it has long and very level paths.
Pechina - Paraje el Chirrillo - Baños de Sierra Alhamilla
The route begins in Pechina and has an approximate distance of 7 kilometres. It is a place that has been chosen for its great cinematographic history.
The area has inspired films like Indiana Jones and was also used as the location for filming of the famous series Game of Thrones.
It presents very beautiful landscapes that are very attractive for runners. While you run, you will find the Parajes del Llano de Castro and Cerro del Puente Quebrado.
University - Costacabana - Torregarcia Hermitage
As this is a simple route, many use it to start their activities in the world of running.
To begin with, you have two options: the partial or complete route. If you choose to start with the first one, the starting point will be the Torregarcia Hermitage.
It is a linear route of 12 kilometres along a spectacular promenade that is very close to the coast.
Cabo de Gata Lighthouse - Vela Blanca
With only 2.8 kilometres of linear journey, it is one of the shortest trails to start your running.
However, it has some areas with high intensity slopes that make it perfect for those who wish to put resistance training into practice.
The training begins at the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse and, after travelling along steeply curved roads, you will reach the Sirens Reef; one of the most emblematic places in the province of Almeria.
Following the path, and before reaching the Vela Blanca, you will see great cliffs that will leave you amazed by their majesty.
