The province of Almeria boasts a great variety of tourist destinations, with beautiful landscapes and perfect environments to enjoy your holidays. One of these idyllic places is Carboneras, where you will find wonderful places to visit.
We present our five reasons to visit Carboneras.
Los Muertos Beach
This is one of the most famous and recognizable beaches of the
Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. It is known for the large number of castaways and corpses that came to this beach from shipwrecks in its vicinity, given the strong currents that converge here.
However, though one should be cautious whenever one enjoys the sea, this recalls times gone by. Currently, the Almeria coastline enjoys enviable coastal safety, which makes nautical accidents an exceptional matter.
Los Muertos Beach is an exceptional beach approximately one kilometre long with very clean and crystal clear water. It is an authentic paradise within the Natural Park. The beach is accessed by narrow stone stairs or a sandy path, and it is a totally virgin beach with no type of service.
Castle of Saint Andrew
This spectacular castle was ordered to be built in the last decade of the 16th century by the second Marquis of Carpio, Luis Lopez de Haro y Sotomayor.
This construction was part of a comprehensive plan for the defence and regeneration of the eastern coast of Almeria. The Castle of Saint Andrew, which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Council of Andalusia, is located in the centre of the urban centre of Carboneras and is a must-see in this town.
Island of Saint Andrew
This islet, located in front of the town of Carboneras, has been declared a Natural Monument and Marine Fishing Reserve by the Council of Andalusia.
The island of Saint Andrew, which is actually two—“La Grande” and “La Chica”—has a volcanic origin and is the northern entrance to the
Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. It serves as a refuge for seabirds and also has rich underwater fauna. It is a spectacular area for diving and snorkelling.
Mesa Roldan Lighthouse
This lighthouse was inaugurated on December 31, 1863, and was electrified in 1972. It is one of the most unique lighthouses in the entire Almeria province and the only one that has a permanent exhibition on lighthouses.
It is located in the Mesa Roldan area, close to the town of Carboneras, a volcanic plateau with a height above sea level of approximately 220 meters. This makes it a magnificent site from which to view the entire coastal area of the
Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park.
For many years it was the tallest lighthouse in all of Spain, until the construction of the Lobos Tower, also known as the Polacra Lighthouse, which is located 280 meters above sea level.
Today the lighthouse is fully automated and offers four flashes every 20 seconds, with a range of 37 kilometres (23 miles).
Moors and Christians Festival
This is celebrated every year in mid-June, in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. It is the most emblematic celebration in Carboneras and the one that attracts the most visitors to witness this interesting celebration, which dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
During the festivities, the memory of the Berber attacks on the coasts is staged. The big day takes place on June 13 (Saint Anthony's day), on which the fighting between the two armies is represented.
