The Paseo of Chirivel
This municipality in the Los Velez region, located 120 kilometres from the provincial capital, is very welcoming and has a multitude of beautiful places to visit.

It is located at 1,034 meters of altitude, within the Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park.

It has a very different landscape from the rest of the province, with limestone mountains and lush pine forests.

This town has been home to human settlements since prehistoric times, with archaeological sites that indicate the presence of the Iberian, Roman, and Arab culture, with the Roman culture being the one with the greatest influence.

Here we present our five reasons to visit Chirivel.

Church of Saint Isidore

The Parish Church of Saint Isidore was built in the 19th century and is one of the must-see points of Chirivel. Inside the temple is a canvas attributed to Luis Tristan, a disciple of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, "El Greco".

The splendour of its architecture and its ancient air has been recovered thanks to actions carried out between 2007 and 2013, as well as the return of a restored image of the Virgin of the Rosary, patroness saint of Chirivel, which now appears inside the temple.

The Millenay Sabina

This ancient tree is found within the Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park. Its age is estimated to be between 600 and 1,000 years and it is 20 meters high.

It is a specimen of Juniperus Thurifera, unique in the province of Almeria thanks to its age and large dimensions.

Precisely, thanks to its longevity, this tree has developed a root system that allows it to withstand the most extreme climates.

It is the true pride of the inhabitants of Chirivel and a true wonder of nature that has known great historical events of the past.

Statue of Dionysus

The discovery of the Statue of Dionysos was one of the most important milestones of archaeology in the province of Almeria, as it was found in an excellent state of preservation. It dates from the 2nd century BC and it was found in the El Villar Archaeological Site, on the outskirts of Chirivel, where one can find an interpretation centre to learn about the past of this beautiful Almeria town.

Currently, the original statue is in the Archaeological Museum of Almeria, but an exact copy of it has been made so that it can be seen in the place where it was found, known as Chirivello Park.

The Paseo of Chirivel

This is one of the most emblematic places in Chirivel. The Paseo of Chirivel gathers almost all the points of interest located in the centre of the town.

Along the Paseo of Chirivel, we can find the Town Hall, Chirivello Park, the main square, the library, and a large number of places where we can eat and enjoy Chirivel.

Gastronomy

Chirivel's gastronomy is based on dishes prepared with food provided by its land and the game animals that abound throughout the region. Its gastronomy is of great tourist interest, as the food in the entire Los Velez region has a unique and incomparable flavour.

If you are visiting Chirivel, be sure to try its rich pastries, which are a real pleasure for the senses.
