For many, Christmas is the happiest time of the year. If you are thinking of spending Christmas in the province of Almeria, you will find many activities full of magic and festive spirit, for both adults and children.
The Christmases offered by the province of Almeria are different, away from the crowds and the bustling and crowded shopping centres, instead offering snowy landscapes, traditions, historic buildings, musical shows, delicious food, Christmas markets and the best weather.
Almeria Christmas traditions
In many of the 103 towns that make up the province of Almeria, decorating the streets is one of the most deeply rooted Christmas traditions. Likewise, in some places, we find spectacular events such as the “Auto de los Reyes Magos” every 6 January in
Los Gallardos, the famous
Pulpi living Nativity scene and street carols in the
Los Velez region.
In Fuente Victoria (
Fondon), the neighbors can be elected mayor for the Day of the Innocents, every 28 December. These "mayors" write their own rules for that day, making this crazy celebration more fun.
The Los Doblones Festival in Alcaudique (
Berja), is the scene of public auctions for the love of a loved one, and characters such as "the auctioneer" and "the hug runner" are found.
If we are talking about a beach Christmas, in
Roquetas de Mar, the traditional “Moragas” are celebrated every 29 December.
They bring together locals and visitors on the beaches with famous barbecues by the sea, in which typical Almerian food is offered.
The most important celebration takes place in the capital of
Almeria on 26 December of each year. This is the day on which the banner left by the Catholic kings when they took the city of Almeria is paraded through the centre of the city to the cathedral, where a Mass is celebrated to commemorate the taking of the town.
Other traditions of Almeria
The parades of the Three Wise Men and the Giants and Big Heads are typical of the towns and the capital of Almeria. Cavalcades go through the streets and sweets and candies are distributed to children. The shops, bars and restaurants are decorated appropriately for these dates and an atmosphere of joy fills every corner of the province.
Nativity scenes can be found throughout the province, not only with figurines, but also with flesh and blood.
The houses, squares and buildings of all the municipalities of Almeria mount their own Nativity scenes and compete in terms of creativity and originality. Even in the capital of Almeria, there are several giant nativity scenes, such as the Playmobil doll nativity scene from the Argar Association, the famous one from the Almeria Provincial Council and the one from the Guitar Museum.
Without a doubt, visiting the province of Almeria on such important dates is always a good idea.
