The monument was erected on April 13, 1991 in honor of the fishermen and men of the sea who were the founders of Garrucha. It is located on the promenade, in front of the port.
The sculpture, chiselled in white marble by the artist Maria de los Angeles Lazaro Guil, represents two hard-working sailors handling their fishing gear and the captured fish. It undoubtedly represents the way of life in Garrucha; a town in which fishing is its main activity.
The people of Garrucha have occasionally suffered from their proximity to the sea, but they have also enjoyed it. Hence, the monument to the fisherman is more than significant for them. In addition, though Garrucha has gradually changed its economy, it is home to one of the few ports that maintain fishing as a current economic activity.
The monument not only shows the superficial part of the fishermen, but also their feelings and efforts. From the positions of the two men and the expressions on their faces, the energy with which they carry out the art of fishing is noticeable, as is their work with the caught fish.
