Cantoria is located throughout the centre of the Almanzora Valley region, on the banks of the Almanzora river. It is a population where the welcoming and hospitable character of its inhabitants stands out.
We present our five reasons to visit Cantoria.
Church of Our Lady of Sorrows
This impressive ecclesiastical construction, dating from the 19th century (1816-1870), has been architecturally compared to a cathedral, rather than a parish church. It was built on an old Renaissance church.
On the outside of the church are three entrance doors: two lateral and the main one, which make up the facade.
At the foot are two towers, which are 22 meters high and between which a portico is formed.
Saint Cayetano & Saint Anton Hermitage
This is the best place to learn about the historical advance that this town has undergone, as it was originally the primitive church of a small urban nucleus located in front of the old site of Cantoria.
As a result of the war of the Alpujarras with the Moorish, the old site was destroyed and the new town began to be built next to this urban nucleus, becoming the main church until the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was built.
It is located in the highest part of the neighbouring hills. From it, you will have one of the best views of the entire population, where you can appreciate all the beauty of its surroundings.
Almanzora Palace
The Palace of the Marquis of Almanzora is the most outstanding neoclassical art building in the province of Almeria. Despite being in ruins, this monument, dating from the 16th century, has been considered an Andalusian Historical Artistic Heritage since 1982.
Defensive towers
Cantoria has an impressive heritage in terms of defensive installations, which were built during a time when enemy attacks were the order of the day.
The Castle “Stone of the Old Place” stands out, some ruins of which were undoubtedly a large castle that was key in the defence of the population.
It is believed that it was built between the 9th and 10th centuries, given its Nasrid influence, but its construction date is not certain.
Another outstanding defensive tower is the “Alto Pulpito” Tower, which is located in the district of Almanzora and was built during the time of Muslim domination in the 10th century. Some of its remains are still standing.
Finally, the Watch Tower of Cantoria, popularly known as "La Torreta", is a cylindrical construction built entirely in masonry.
These towers were intended to communicate with each other to inform of any attempt at invasion or danger, through visual warnings with mirrors or smoke.
Stately buildings
Cantoria stands out for its stately buildings, such as the Marquis of La Romana House, a two-story neoclassical building built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and the Saavedra Theater, whose construction was completed in 1926.
