1. The Only Desert in Europe.
The only desert located on European soil is in this territory, with an area of 280 km2.
In the
Tabernas desert, there are innumerable environmental resources of interest, particularly geological.
It is also home to an endless number of species exclusive to the area.
2. Cinematographic Locations. In the middle of the desert, there are different theme parks dedicated to the American Wild West. In their lands, important western films have been filmed, as well as other successful films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 800 Bullets, among others.
Today, there are performances in these theme parks that emulate the Wild West, with the participation of gunmen, bandits, Native Americans, saloon girls, and sheriffs.
3. Tabernas Solar Platform.
In the
Tabernas desert, there is a site of first-generation solar systems, whose construction began at the end of the '70s.
It is the main and largest of the European test centres in the field of solar thermal energy.
It maintains a schedule of guided tours and a visitor service centre.
4. Castle of Tabernas.
This was built in the 11th century, under Arab rule.
It is located on the outskirts of the municipality of Tabernas, on a hill, from which you can see a splendid panoramic view of the desert landscape of Tabernas.
It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, under the category of Monument, in 1993.
5. Saint Sebastian Hermitage. This is the oldest religious building in town. It dates from the 12th and 14th centuries and was built over a synagogue. Later, during the time of the Catholic kings, it was repaired and transformed into a church.
6. Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation. It is located in the centre of Tabernas. Built in 1505, it has a rectangular plan and covers 1,200 m2.
Since 1982, it has been recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with the category of Monument.
7. Glorieta de España. Adjacent to the Church of the Incarnation is a large square, much appreciated by the inhabitants of Tabernas, called the Glorieta de España.
With open spaces, its captivating ornamentation invites you to rest and enjoy the healthy environment. The main events of the town take place here, mainly the patron saint festivities.
8. Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Anguishes. At the foot of the Castle of Tabernas is another genuine representation of religious architecture. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Anguishes is dedicated to this virgin, who is the patroness saint of Tabernas.
It is a small religious building built between the 18th and 19th centuries. It is currently the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Anguishes.
9. Municipal Theatre. This is located in the centre of Tabernas and is the setting of continuous programs of theatre, music, dance, and cultural and social activities that delight locals and visitors.
10. Gastronomy. The wide variety of dishes of the Tabernas gastronomy includes delicacies such as rabbit with garlic, wheat with fennel, burnt garlic broth, chicken in “pepitoria”, and the inevitable porridge.
