Gergal is the last stop before entering the Tabernas desert. Located in the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres, it is home to a majestic castle that crowns it, standing on the side of the mountain and serving as a shelter for the municipality. It is a great fortress from the 16th century that served as a refuge and defence in the past. It was also the scene of the Moorish revolts.

There are remains of archaeological sites of the first settlers. Most are graves and farm tools— vestiges that can be visited at the sites of El Almendral and El Sepulcro.

In the surroundings of Gergal, the practice of hunting is common. For nature lovers, there are several hiking trails. With regard to its traditional crafts, we must highlight the loom workshops in the town. As for its gastronomy, the main ingredient of its typical dishes is game meats. Bird broths and gurullos with rabbit are some of its most representative dishes.
