What to do in Huercal-Overa

In Huercal-Overa, the Villa de Huercal-Overa Theatre stands out as a first-class scenic space where numerous theatre, dance and music events are held. It is second in the entire province of Almeria in terms of capacity for spectators.

Through the different attractions of Huercal-Overa, we can take a tour of its incredible history. You can visit the Nasrid Watchtower of Huercal-Overa, known as “The Castle”. This defensive tower was built in the 14th century and has recently been masterfully renovated, with modern elements implemented so that tourists can climb to the top of the tower, but without altering its original nature and structure. There are also the ruins of the old Arab castle, known as the Castle of Saint Barbara, located next to the Almanzora river, which was fundamental in its time to stopping the advances of the Christian troops thanks to its imposing view of the entire area.

Some of the most interesting places to visit in Huercal-Overa are the trenches of the Spanish Civil War. These eight trenches are located in the surroundings of the Huercal-Overa Castle and enable us to understand the conditions experienced by the soldiers who had to take refuge there, waiting for the enemy. Beyond the painful memory that this visit brings, it also allows you to discover the beautiful view from the area.

It is almost mandatory to walk through the Main Square, a meeting point for locals. Plays, recitals and open-air fairs are often held there. If you have time, you can visit the Parochial Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, built in 1709. It is the most important religious architectural work in Huercal-Overa.
