Castle of Saint Barbara (Huercal-Overa)

Castle of Saint Barbara (Huercal-Overa)

This castle, located in the town of Santa Barbara, is on a hill that is just to the left of the Almanzora river. It is a castle of Arab architecture, built in the 13th century, and served as shelter and protection against the advance of Christians.

It is said that this castle was of great importance during the time it was built, because from its facilities you could see the castles of Cantoria, Huercal-Overa, and Purchena, among others.

Today it is a cultural heritage site where you can see the remains of its thick walls, made for the protection of those who inhabited it, the paved floors, the remains of the tower square that adorned the castle, and the cisterns that survived the passage of time.

The Castle of Saint Barbara is a privately owned space, but with free access to the public. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Monument by the Resolution of June 22, 1993.
