Saint Mary Church (Mojacar)

Saint Mary Church (Mojacar)

The parish church of Saint Mary was built in the year 1560, probably on an old Arab mosque. It had the function both of housing a religious cult and serving as a fortress, which is why it is built with large stone ashlars.

Its interior is quite sober and over the great altar there is a distinctive painting created by Michael Sucker; a German painter who resided in the locality for nine years. Among his images, the Virgin of the Rosary and Saint Augustine stand out.

In the church square we can see the the white marble statue of the Mojaquera, which represents a woman dressed in the typical costume of the municipality and carrying a pitcher that was used to bring water from the village fountain.

This was declared a Monument of Cultural Interest. The construction has masonry walls. A chapel was incorporated on the sides and the sacristy on another.
