Dalias is located 42 km from the capital of the province, in the
Poniente of Almeria region. It is a popular town for its gastronomy, culture, beautiful landscapes, and lifestyle.
We present our 5 reasons to visit Dalias.
History
The history of Dalias goes back many centuries, as it is a millenary territory where great prehistoric and Roman finds have been made. However, the most important finds that have been made in Dalias correspond to its Islamic past. Precisely, during this period of Islamic occupation, Dalias had a fortress (10th century) and a mosque (13th century).
Christ of the Light
In Dalias, there is a great devotion to the
Christ of Light, whose image is located inside the
Parish Church of Saint Mary of Ambrox.
Every year, during September, festivities are celebrated in honour of the Holy Christ of Light. These culminate on the third Sunday in September with the procession of the Christ of Light. Thousands of people from all corners of the province of Almeria come to Dalias to participate in this procession, which year after year has become one of the most massive pilgrimages in the entire province of Almeria.
Casino of Dalias
The
Casino of Dalias has over a century of history and has been the true social promoter of the entire western area of Almeria and the lower Alpujarra of Almeria, from where the majority of its more than 1,000 members come.
It is a beautiful construction that represents the great economic power that Dalias achieved in the past, first with the mining industry and later with the agricultural industry, thanks to the cultivation of table grapes.
Routes and Trails
If you visit Dalias, you will be able to enjoy an extensive network of trails to get to know the
Sierra de Gador, which stretches for 52 km through this area of the province of Almeria.
The
PR A-113 route stands out. It is a circular route that begins and ends in the Celin Recreation Area and is divided into several sections. You can also walk the
El Cerron Path (PR A-154), which has a round trip length of 8.6 km and from which you can enjoy magnificent views of the Mediterranean coast.
Finally, on the
PR A-144 route, also circular and 8.3 km long, you will enjoy the Southern “two thousand” of the Sierra de Gador.
Gastronomy
Dalias has an exquisite
gastronomy that will delight tourists who visit this town in Almeria, made with products from its fertile lands and characterized by the historical influence of its Arab past.
Its most characteristic dishes include snow peas, from the pea family, which have a flat pod and smaller seeds. They have a more delicate, sweetish flavour than that of the common pea and are eaten with the pod included.
We cannot fail to mention such exquisite dishes as the “choto al ajillo”, the “ajoblanco”, the “présules” omelette, the stew of “présules”, the snail sauce, the Dalias gazpacho, the broad beans, and the spicy snail rice.
