Taberno is located in the foothills of the Sierra de las Estancias, occupying an area of 44 km². It is a town of narrow streets and white houses with balconies and patios that still have characteristics of their past. Its history has been marked by the instability of the different movements and struggles. However, at present, it enjoys economic prosperity through agricultural and livestock activities that its inhabitants perform with the focus of increasing the region’s prosperity. Its founding is estimated to have occurred in the 17th century, although it existed previously as a nucleus of the rural population. At that time, it did not yet exist as a municipality, as it belonged to Velez-Rubio, from which it became independent in 1839.

In its centre are several buildings that are part of its historical heritage, such as the Church of Saint Joseph, which dates back to the 18th century. The Ethnographic Museum and the Almazara, an old oil factory, are places where you can learn about the rich history of the town. In Taberno, there are various routes and rural roads where you can go hiking and trekking. There is also a 4x4 route for four-wheel-drive vehicles, which allows you, under the direction of a tour guide, to go through boulevards, natural viewpoints and narrow ravines, with varying degrees of difficulty.

As for its typical gastronomy, Taberno is famous in the region for the quality of its sausages and blood sausages, its excellent goat cheeses and its traditional pastries made in wood-fired ovens. This municipality is characterized by hospitality, generosity, and the hubbub of the inhabitants, which is why some important festivals stand out, such as the August festival, the Candelaria festival, and the meeting of “cuadrillas” of Taberno with the dance of the Animas.
